I''ve been a guitar player for many decades. In the last 10 years, I''ve taken up playing bass as well. Since I write my own songs and record all the instruments myself, I''ve noticed that my bass playing was too simple.
So I started paying attention to what bass players in good bands were doing. I quickly learned that it'';s the transition notes that play a large part of keep a bass part interesting. Just playing the root on the chord is boring. But walking between chord changes adds a lot to the feel and energy.
Now that I''ve been studying other bass players and improving my own playing, I find that playing bass is a lot more interesting than I ever considered.
If you''re a guitar player adding playing bass to your skills, recognize that the frets are much further apart, the strings are a lot heavier, and the pressure it takes to play those strings is a lot more than what''s needed for the guitar.
