I'm often asked what all this AI (Artificial Intelligence) stuff I keep seeing and hearing about. So, let's see if I can clear some things up.
There are 3 levels of AI:
1) Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) or Weak AI
This is when it is designed for one specific task, such as a voice assistant, recommendation, or spam filter. This level of AI doesn't think on its own. It is deriving solutions based on vast amounts of data that have been collected over time.
2) Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or Strong AI
This is currently hypothetical. It is AI with cognitive abilities matching humans, capable of understanding, learning, and applying knowledge across a wide range of tasks, just like a person. It has not yet been achieved.
3) Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)
A theoretical AI that vastly surpasses the smartest human minds in virtually every field, including creativity, problem-solving, and general wisdom.
So, as you can see, while many companies throw around the term AI, it's not what most people think. It's not Robby the Robot from the old movie called Forbidden Planet. It's not what many TV shows and movies show as AI.
As of 2025, AI is still basically just the smart use of large models of data.
Where do I see AI in the future?
AI has a place for today and tomorrow. Today, it's helping with medical diagnoses, finding patterns to help recognize cyber criminals and their code, and everything from finding the name of a song from listening to it to helping investors make better investments.
Tomorrow, it will do some of the work of humans. But it's not going to replace smart people doing smart things any time soon. Well, let me rephrase that: It won't successfully replace humans soon. Many companies think they can let humans go and just use AI, but they're finding that it's not as easy as the marketing makes it sound.
